If you have ever been in or seen a diesel car driving down the road, you know the cars are different from regular gasoline cars. One significant difference is that they have different fuel injection systems, which deliver fuel to the engine. To improve fuel atomization, diesel engines have their own type — a complex common rail diesel injection — whereas gasoline engines use a completely different kind of system, unique to its own working conditions.
Common rail diesel injection system – The common rail diesel injection system is one of the methods to supply fuel to the engine. It stores fuel in a specific compartment called the fuel rail. This rail serves as a fuel reservoir until a fuel injectors spray the fuel into the engine. From the fuel rail, fuel travels to each fuel injector at the proper pressure and precisely when it needs to be released. So this accurate delivery of the fuel enables the engine to perform better and also helps with better fuel efficiency, which is quite needed for good mileage.
The ECM activates individual fuel injectors, signalling each injector when it is time for the engine to use the fuel. Those signals let the injectors know exactly when to open up and spray the fuel at precisely the appropriate pressure and timing.
Quieter Operation: Diesel engines can be noisy at times. But they are quieter than traditional diesels, and common-rail diesel injection makes them much smoother, which is a better experience for driver and passengers alike.
Low Fuel Pressure: If there is a leak in the fuel system or if the fuel pump is malfunctioning, the engine will not get the appropriate amount of fuel, and it may shut down. For example, if you have low fuel pressure, examine the fuel lines and pump to see what is wrong.
Clogged Fuel Injectors — Dirty fuel can sometimes help clog the fuel injectors. This can result in a poor running engine. You can attempt a fuel system cleaner or you could remove the injectors and have a shop clean them.
It is known that the ECM after some years can fail and have glitches that can cause the engine not to start at all or run so badly that it is not useable. If you think it could be an electronic problem, you should have the ECM tested and replaced if it isn’t working right.
